A Breath of Fresh Air

I woke up not feeling so well, not sick, just off. We had a hard conversation. I felt teary. But then we decided to go to a local community event. I got so immersed in it. And when I came home, I felt like a new woman. I felt invigorated, enlivened, positive and hopeful. It was as if I had taken a breath of fresh air.

Why did I feel better? My mind had taken time to focus on something else. I had forgotten about my earlier angst. Moving my body had made it feel better. Simple interventions, yes, but with profoundly positive results.

Feeling blue? Try something that distracts you-no, not something that dissociates you, like scrolling your phone. Something immersive, creative, interesting. It could be an outdoor activity like going for a hike, walk, or run. It could be a creative pursuit like painting, knitting or crocheting, or wood working. It could be a museum tour. Get up; get out. Literally breathe some fresh air. Who knows? It might have the same effects as it did for me, lightening your load and livening your mood. Isn't it cool how God made us?

Breath: Another 30 Day Journey with Yoga with Adriene

Let's cut to the quick. I did not do this challenge as I should have. Yoga is best done in a studio, with the co-regulation and instruction of a teacher. At home, it is best done with quiet, focus, and solitude. I did none of this. I did the challenge online via video. I often did other things during the video (e.g. reading on my phone). I sometimes got interrupted and had to half and half a practice. But it was still good for me.

Adriene Mischler of Yoga with Adriene posts a 30 day challenge almost every year. I have done them for several years now. Each year, it's a squeeze to fit in the practices for 30 days. Each year, I consider quitting, but my stubbornness keeps me going. In the end, I am glad when I finish.

To be honest, I'm not in the best yoga shape, but I'm not an absolute beginner, either. I get annoyed at the very basic nature of the beginning practices. They seem too slow and too easy, but I think that is part of Mischler's intent. We all need to start with a beginner's mind. We need to reset, not think we know it all, and begin anew. Good practice for yoga, and for life.

Mischler's style is part restorative hatha, part energetic vinyasa, part Pilates with some plain old stretching thrown in. Really, there is something for everyone. Mischler's dramatic flair and quirky humor add to the practice. (If you investigate her videos, beware, that sometimes her humor can be a bit mature.)

I combined the challenge this year with my run training. This contributed to the tight scheduling and multi-tasking, but it worked. I looked forward to the slowness of the practice after a potentially harder run. Making these challenge a success, for me, means using them as meditation, not exercise. For me, they don't do the job of exercise, even though yoga is an exercise.

The theme of this challenge was breath, focusing on the breath to rest. Focusing on the breath to guide through. Focusing on the breath to stay in the moment. I didn't do great with breath. I didn't even practice all of the breaths. But I said the challenge was good for me. Why? It gave me a breath of fresh air. It forced me to focus at least a little bit. I practiced prioritizing. I remembered, even if only for a brief few moments, what it felt like to rest.

Will I continue with daily yoga, as recommended by Mischler? No, probably not. Will I keep doing yoga. Yes, probably so. Will I do next year's challenge? Yes, if I can. It's a good way to reset at the beginning of the year, and if nothing else, motivation to keep my practice going.

Hello, February, goodbye, Breath. But really not goodbye. Hello to keeping the practice going, at least subconsciously, to giving myself a little rest and space, even if not indicated by the clock or the yoga calendar. We all live on air, so yoga or not, breath is important.

Breathe.

Yep. We might all need this one today. Because whether our candidate got elected or not, the world is a scary place. Let's be real. It was scary before this. COVID, anyone? So here's a simple piece of advice: Breathe. Yeah, it seems basic, but we really need to do it.

One day recently, I got really overwhelmed. My thoughts were racing. My body was spastic. I was rushed and in a hurry. I went for a walk and literally had to focus on my breath and tune out everything else. Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out. Listen to the sounds of air coming in and out. Breathe in. Breathe out. It made a surprising difference.

Other ways to breathe?

The hand breath

The belly breath

Meditation

You do you. Find your way and do it. Just breathe. Life may be stressful, but nothing can take away your breath, at least until God says it can. So use your body. Serve your body.

BREATHE!

Breath Prayers

I often get overwhelmed when people remind me that I'm supposed to pray without ceasing. I know that's what God's Word commands (1 Thess 5:17), but it's hard for me to do. I'm busy and human and quite frankly just don't always want to seek the Lord wholeheartedly.

Somewhere along the journey of my spiritual life, however, I got introduced to breath prayers. In the traditional practice, people pray in rhythm with their breath, as a form of contemplation or meditation. (Read more on that here.) In my practice, these prayers are just simple words I can say in a breath. They're often desperate cries to the Lord, but they are also honest and real. They remind me that there is more to this world than me and that Jesus is my source of power.

Here are a few of my breath prayers and why I pray them:

Lord, help!
Desperate times call for desperate measures. And sometimes sending out an SOS is all I have in me.

Let me be love.
This is a prayer I often pray as I go to work. I can't necessarily witness with words in this setting, but I pray that my life will be a witness.

Let me be Jesus.
I pray this as I start hard days and go into difficult situations. I may be all some people see of Jesus and I need the Holy Spirit to empower me to represent him accurately.

Let love flow through.
A lot of my prayer lately revolve around love as the Lord is teaching me I need to learn to love a whole lot better. I tend to be a human doing instead of a human being, so when I pray this, I am praying for God to act and empower me to do right instead of trying so hard to find and do right on my own.

They're yours, Lord.
When I want to cling to people for comfort or when I'm scared for people I love, I remind myself that people are not mine. They are the Lord's, and as a Good Father, He will take care of them (Matt 7:11).

Jesus.
In those times when I literally don't know what to say or do, I call on Jesus, for there is power in His name. This is also my cry for the Holy Spirit to intercede for me because I don't know how to pray (Rom 8:26-27).
